A Letter From David Chipman About The Importance Of Silencer Regulation
For twenty-five years, I served as an agent at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Today, I want to talk to you about a bill that would make 1.3 million firearm silencers available for purchase without a background check.
Then I am going to ask you to do something about it.
Here’s the truth: for those who want to inflict harm in our communities or on our police, a silencer is a dangerous tool that can transform a killer into a killing machine. They have one purpose, to disguise an ambush on a target or series of targets.
Last week, I was set to testify before the House against the SHARE Act — a reckless bill that would make our communities less safe while making it more difficult for law enforcement to do their jobs. That hearing was canceled, of course, when members of Congress were shot at in Virginia one week ago today.
But I know this is a top priority of the gun lobby, so it’s coming back up soon. And the only thing standing in their way is your willingness to do something about it.
Chip in $3 to Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly’s emergency 72 hours fundraising drive to power Americans for Responsible Solutions’ work to defeat legislation that would deregulate the sale of firearm silencers.
There’s a reason why silencers are rarely used in crimes today, and that’s because their sale has been regulated since 1934. Rather than make things easier for criminals, we should focus on solutions we know are proven to keep Americans safe… like closing loopholes in our background check system.
But first, it’s up to us to stop this bad bill. There’s only one day left in Gabby and Mark’s emergency fundraising drive. Add your donation today.
All my best,
